Laptop Insurance premiums to go up?

Laptop Insurance premiums - Should they go up?

Well, we would say no, unless you want to protect everything ON your laptop. According to Symantec, the average value of the data on a laptop is now £500,000 (which frankly I find hard to believe, but that is taking into account the value of all data - eg how do you value the list of your customers?  How much is that really worth?  Could you claim for that in an insurance claim?)

Anyway, it is an interesting point made at
http://labs.pcw.co.uk/2006/01/laptop_insuranc.html

This point is like insuring your children or partner.  No matter how much money you get for them if they die, nothing is ever going to bring them back.  So take care of your data in the first place.  You can replace a laptop with a fistful of money - but replacing the data is a whole other story.  I know that is THE 1 thing I would be upset about should I ever lose my laptop - the information on it.

So, what I do is this.  I have a “Lacie” external hard drive.  They have come down in cost a LOT recently and can be as little as £50 to £80 for a big hard drive space.  I then have an automating software that everyday copies any new files to the Lacie.  I use a software package called “Second Copy” but there are a few others.

What this software does when it runs is this … It looks at the date late modified for all files on my laptop, and if that date is after the date of that file already stored on the external hard drive, or if the file is not already on the external hard drive, it copies the file across to the hard drive.

So automatically everyday my laptop is backed up.  Then, once a week or month, I manually backup the backup.  I simply copy the files on the Lacie to another Lacie or another computer on our network.

That way, my data is ‘insured’ and so is my laptop!
